"The new athletic association will endeavor to avoid some of the mistakes made by the old Athletic Club," declared Henry Clay Pennypacker after taking ownership of the Philadelphia A's in 1888. "Sound business principles will be instilled into the management, and we hope to have such a good club next season that we will receive the earnest and hearty support of the press and public. We hope to have a very strong team, and some new players will be signed at once." Pennypacker's fountain-pen "7"-strength signature appears on this elegant stock certificate (7x10, GD/VG with fold lines) that's dated October 15, 1889, after the Wilbert Robinson-led A's had finished third in the American Association standings. Auction LOA from JSA.
