The game of football meets the business of advertising, with this 1934-1994 Washington Redskins matchbook hoard. Totaling (220+) mostly different examples, this extensive selection begins shortly after the current Washington Commanders franchise was founded in Boston, way back in 1932. In 1937, the team relocated to Washington DC, and this offering concludes in the 1990s, while the team was still known as the Redskins. Through the years, Redskins matchbooks have featured either player photos (some with facsimile signatures), schedules, or team logos, along with regional advertising for a variety of business entities.
Housed in a collector's album with slipcase, this well-organized collection is comprised of sets, near sets and singles, that generally present in above average to better state. All but (3) of the more recent examples have the matches and staples removed, leaving fairly unobtrusive staple holes. Less then 5% bear handwritten numbers, and less than 5% suffer surface loss along the bottom edge. Nearly all of those dating from 1934-1951 have stains and/or tape reinforcement at bottom, on the side opposite of the striker strips. For the most part, the photos and graphics remain unmolested by these conditions, and overall this vintage collection is broadly appealing.
